OJ Borg, BBC Radio 2’s late-night DJ faced off against a Neighbours mega-fan in his regular feature, Midnight Mastermind, this week.

In a spin on the iconic BBC television series Mastermind, OJ Borg faces someone who has specialist knowledge on a subject – the only thing is, he doesn’t know what the subject will be. The specialist reveals the topic and then OJ has around 3 minutes, the time it takes for a song to play, to do some quick research before facing the questions.

Neighbours Super-Fan, Jack Thompson from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne appeared on the show on Thursday night (September 21st) to see how much OJ knew about the goings-on on Ramsay Street.

Jack’s first question to OJ was “On which date did Neighbours first air in the UK?” OJ knew it started in Australia on 18th March 1985, but didn’t have a clue when it started in the UK. So he wasn’t off to a good start.

Jack followed up with “The show made history in 2018 with the first same-sex wedding on Australian TV. Who were the grooms?” Impressively, OJ knew straight away that Aaron was in the wedding, but couldn’t guess David’s nam. (And flirted with the idea of it being Toadie for a brief moment).

The final question asked “Which classic character from the 80s, who was known for her distinctive laugh, returned in 2021 and married Toadfish Rebecchi in the final episode in 2022?” Knowing he was stumped, OJ replied “Just for the LOLs, I am going to say Madge”. Of course, we all know it is our Melanie.

Jack then did an impressive copy of Melanie’s distinctive laugh. If you want to listen to the entire segment (complete with laugh), click the link above.

OJ didn’t do particularly well, but with 38 years of history and 8907 episodes jam-packed with unmissable drama, it wasn’t an easy job for him.

If you want to brush up on your knowledge, Amazon Freevee and Amazon Prime Video have over 2,500 episodes of Neighbours available to stream including iconic episodes and unmissable moments from across the decades and every episode ever from 2012-2023.
