After saving his ex-wife from a hostage situation (just another day in Erinsborough), Toadie ended up returning to Melanie later in the day, finding her shattered and scared. Alone in the house, she asks Toadie to stay with her until someone else gets home. With Karl on a night shift and Holly covering an emergency shift at the hotel, no one knows how long that will be.

Toadie calls Terese and explains. She agrees that Toadie should stay with Mel in her time of need, but is clearly not happy with the situation.

Melanie explains the fear that she has lived in since Eden first threatened her over a year ago, the event that caused her to flee, leaving Toadie and his family behind.

“He tortured me. Fine. I could take it. But I couldn’t take him hurting the people that I loved. I thought, by letting you all go, I would make you safe.”

Time passes and no one has come back, Toadie realises that he will need to spend the night at the Kennedy house with Mel.

He calls Terese, but she clearly is not happy at the situation, her husband, alone, with his ex-wife.

They set up beds on the sofas in the lounge room. As they settle in for the night, both begin to reminisce of their time together and as a family.

As nostalgia takes over, Melanie admits that she misses Toadie. She missed sharing a bed with him and that for months, she couldn’t sleep on his side of the bed.

Likewise, Toadie admits how hard it was for him. How much he missed Melanie, but he reminds her that he loves Terese.

“I know you do, I want you to be happy.”

Toadie tells a tearful Melanie that he wants her to be happy too, but his future is with Terese.

The next morning, Toadie finally catches up with Terese, who has been actively avoiding him.

Terese explains that she is struggling to process why he wanted to spend the night with Melanie. When Toadie reminds her that he didn’t have a problem with her running to Paul’s side, she claims that the situation is entirely different.

He explains that they both have history, but it is just that, history. It is her that he loves.

But he then confesses that he did reminisce about happier times with Mel, but was adamant that he was clear with her that they had no future together, and that he wanted to be with Terese.

Having been in a not-dissimilar situation with her first husband, Brad, when his ex, Lauren Turner, lived opposite them, Terese decided that she needed to take action so that history didn’t repeat itself.

Out on the street, Melanie thanks Terese for sharing her husband with her in her hour of need and how happy she is that they have all got to a place where everyone can be friends.

But Terese wasn’t messing around.

“I don’t know what place you think we’ve arrived at, but you’ve arrived alone. I am not sharing Toadie with you. You are not friends.

He is my husband and you should not be talking to him about your time together.”

Melanie is surprised that Toadie had told Terese about their late-night conversations.

Terese makes it clear that she will not stand any more contact between the pair.

“I am Toadie’s present, future, everything. And you’re his past. And I won’t let you steal him away from me.”

Melanie tries to explain that she isn’t trying to take Toadie away, but Terese makes it very clear that she doesn’t believe Mel.

“If you can’t be honest with me, then I hope you can at least be honest with yourself.”

How far will Terese go to protect her marriage? What are Melanie’s true intentions?
