Following the announcement last night that Neighbours had been nominated for “Most Outstanding Daytime Drama” in the Daytime Emmy Awards, today, a second nomination has been announced.

No stranger to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, Guy Pearce has been nominated for his role of Mike Young in “Outstanding Guest Performance in a Daytime Drama Series”. Guy originally played the role of Mike in the show from 1986-1989 and returned for the show’s “finale” week in 2022, reuniting with his teenage love, Jane Harris.

With Guy now living in Europe and more often seen in limited-run dramas and movies, when Neighbours was resurrected in 2023 it left the producers with a quandary of what they could do with Mike.

Rather than kill the iconic character off, Pearce agreed to film a number of scenes for the show, reunited with Jane again, on location at Busbridge Lakes, near Godalming in Surrey. Annie Jones, who plays Jane, was in the UK for the Neighbours Celebration Tour and spent two days filming the scenes with Guy before the tour commenced.

These scenes were slotted into early episodes of the show, explaining that Mike was offered a job working in the UK as a motorcycle tour guide, explaining his absence from Ramsay Street. We have seen guy make a number of cameos since, speaking with Jane via Facetime. Rumours that Mike may make a return to Ramsay Street were fuelled when it was revealed that Guy was in Melbourne visiting his friend and on-screen daughter Henrietta Graham who plays Sam Young, earlier this year.

This is the first year that Neighbours has been eligible to be included in the Emmy awards, which are the TV equivalent of the Oscars, as it is a US co-production with Amazon and debuts on American screens at the same time as overseas.

Guy is in good company in his category, as legendary actor Dick Van Dyke is also nominated for his guest appearance in the US Soap, Days of Our Lives.

The winners of the Daytime Emmys will be revealed in a televised ceremony on June 7th.
