When it was announced that Neighbours would be returning to our screens, one of the biggest questions people asked was “Who or what is Amazon Freevee and how can I watch it?”

What is Freevee?

Amazon Freevee launched in 2019, originally called IMDb TV, offering hundreds of shows and movies from the archives of many networks and studios around the world. The service later commissioned a number of brand new shows to complement their archive and in 2022 rebranded as Amazon Freevee to highlight that they were a free streaming service and that they were connected to the Amazon family.

Freevee now has a number of new titles including Judy Justice, the follow-on series from Judge Judy, starring Judge Judith Sheindlin, the COVID comedy Sprung and, most recently, the critically acclaimed hidden camera comedy-drama show, Jury Duty.

Is a soap going to work on a streaming service?

Neighbours is the first soap in the UK to find a first-run home on a streaming platform. In the USA the long-running daytime soap Days Of Our Lives moved to the Peacock premium streaming platform in 2022 after 57 years on the NBC network. They originally had a one-year commission by Peacock, this was recently extended by another two years, indicating that the move was popular with fans. In the UK, Hollyoaks is the most-streamed show on the Channel 4 app and the BBC had great success offering first-look episodes of EastEnders on iPlayer. Being on Freevee means that for the first time in history, the show will air in the USA and Canada, as well as many other countries around the world, on the same day as Australia, giving the show a much bigger global audience.
